Amazing

Despite the fact I know my son is a genius ;) sometimes he still amazes me at what he can figure out how to do with no prior experience.

Like this nice surprise when I got home last night.



First, a "before" photo (above) - of the east end of our chain link fence in our front yard. I took this just last month. This stretch of fence to the right has been messed up for a year -- since a bad storm dropped huge limbs onto the fence, which wiped out the top bar almost all the way across. I have been planning to pay $$$ to have a fence company come out and put in new top bar and straightened out the kinks.

But when I got home yesterday, this is how it looked!

Steven had found a way to straighten all the bent top bars, used fence stretchers (and my truck) to straighten the skewed uprights, and now has it looking almost like it was never damaged! Kudos to Steven! That was nothing short of amazing - especially since he didn't spend a single dime -- just worked on fixing all the parts that I had given up as un-reusable!

On other notes:
My! How the ducks are growing! It is hard to believe we've only had them for a week and a half and they are now so tall they can see over the top of their box.
Ready to move them on to the next holding area, looks like!


The newly planted asparagus is already up, too! Of course, we won't harvest it this year since it is getting established. But this promises great eating for next spring!

Baby Ducks!

Picked up the ducklings on Friday!

Steven had ordered 5 (straight run), but two died in shipment. So that leaves us with three Cayuga ducklings, which changes our chance of getting one male, one female to like a six-in-ten chance, but that's still good.

I'm amazed at how fast they grew just over the weekend! They are so cute!

Spring project photos

With springtime here, we have been so busy I haven't had much time to update. So I thought I'd make this short update just a compilation of photos of different projects we have going currently:

First -- something we had been putting off for years due to cost: We are re-roofing our tool shed (called "the washhouse" by us, since that was the original purpose of the building back before they had indoor plumbing inside the house). This has been long needed, and so after the roofing is done, we will work on repairing any siding boards and then repainting the exterior. It's an amazingly good old building for it's age, and we want to make it last.

Steven's been very busy with garden stuff, and has many things planted. Here is a photo of the trench for the asparagus roots he planted. He has also put in rhubarb, and I've ordered horseradish roots; on top of the normal garden stuff we have already put in.

He's begun many plants inside, and his tomato plants are looking especially good. He thinks he will have more than he can use, so he hopes to sell some as bedding plants to other people.

The goats are doing well. He still thinks the young doe (shown here) is pregnant and will probably kid in May. She's not nearly as big as the other doe (who had triplets) was, thank goodness, so we hope she only has one.
The other doe, that lost the triplets, seems to be going back into breeding cycle.

And Steven is supposed to pick up his new baby ducks today! I hope to post photos of them up here next week.
